Copilot was just the start. Business Central now has autonomous AI agents that handle real work end-to-end. Here is what they do and how to use them.
Short answer: an AI agent in Business Central is an assistant that does a whole task, not just answers a question. It reads an email order and prepares the sales order, or reads a supplier invoice and drafts the purchase invoice, and a person reviews and approves before anything is posted. Microsoft ships some agents with Business Central, and you can build your own for your processes. Some are still in preview and not yet available in every country.

Where agents pay off
- Sales orders by email: customers who still send orders as emails or PDFs. The agent finds the customer and items, applies the price list and flags what it does not recognise.
- Supplier invoices: reading PDFs, matching them to purchase orders and receipts, and preparing the invoice for approval. See accounts payable automation.
- Repetitive back-office work: collections reminders, document chasing, data checks before month-end.
They pay off when the task is frequent, rule-based and currently retyped by hand. Rare, judgement-heavy tasks are better left to people.
Keeping control
- Human approval: the agent prepares, a person posts. Nothing reaches the books without review.
- Permissions: the agent only sees and does what its role allows, like any user.
- Traceability: every action is logged, so you can see what the agent did and why.
What it costs
Agents are billed by use rather than as a fixed licence. Start with one measured process, compare the hours saved with the usage cost, and only then extend to others.
