Bramvia — Business Central Experts
Since August 2023, UK alcohol duty is charged by ABV across all drinks, with Small Producer Relief and Draught Relief. What a brewery, distillery or winery needs from its ERP, and what Business Central covers.
Short answer: since 1 August 2023, UK alcohol duty is calculated on alcohol strength (ABV) for every category, with Small Producer Relief for smaller producers of drinks below 8.5% ABV and Draught Relief for qualifying draught products. A producer now needs to know the ABV, volume and relief of every product leaving duty suspension, month by month. Business Central records batches, ABV as an item attribute, bonded and duty-paid stock in separate locations, blending and packaging as production, and Making Tax Digital for VAT. The monthly duty return and excise warehouse reporting are added with an extension.
Sound familiar?
- The duty return is rebuilt from spreadsheets every month.
- ABV and relief per product live in someone's head.
- Bonded and duty-paid stock are counted separately.
- Batch traceability from cask or tank to bottle takes hours.
What the rules require
- Duty by ABV: every product's duty depends on its strength band, so ABV must be recorded per batch and product.
- Reliefs: Small Producer Relief and Draught Relief change the rate per product and have to be applied correctly.
- Duty suspension: whisky and other spirits matured in bond sit in approved excise warehouses, with records of every movement in and out.
- Packaging: extended producer responsibility for packaging already applies, and deposit return schemes for drinks containers are being introduced.

FAQ
Does Business Central calculate UK alcohol duty out of the box? No. It records ABV, volumes and movements; a duty reporting extension builds the monthly return from them, including reliefs.
Can we see duty per product before it's due? Yes. With ABV and relief recorded per product, duty on what leaves bond is visible as it happens, not at month end.
